Together, We Feed the Future.

MAHA is a bold, women-led continental movement placing gender equity at the foundation of food security across Africa. Because hunger in Africa will not end until women are placed at the centre of the solution.

Our Mission

A Women-Led Continental Movement for Food Security and Gender Justice

MAHA — Mothers Against Hunger in Africa — was founded on a singular conviction: that Africa's food security crisis cannot be resolved without confronting the systemic exclusion of women from land, resources, governance, and financing. We are a non-partisan, women-led continental platform that builds bridges between grassroots women farmers, policymakers, development finance institutions, and global hunger advocates.

Thematic Pillars

Five Pillars. One Purpose. A Hunger-Free Africa.

Our work is structured around five interconnected thematic areas — each targeting a critical dimension of the gender and food security nexus.

Women, Land & Agricultural Resources

Dismantling structural, legal, and cultural barriers that deny women equitable access to land, inputs, credit, and extension services across Africa.

Nutrition, Maternal Health & the First 1,000 Days

Integrating food security and maternal health as inseparable imperatives — with a sharp focus on the most critical window of human development.

Women's Leadership in Food Policy & Governance

Confronting the democratic deficit that excludes women from food governance — from village cooperatives to African Union summits.

Climate Change, Food Systems & Gender Vulnerability

Placing gender at the centre of Africa's climate adaptation frameworks — because women bear the greatest exposure to climate shocks and the least resources to adapt.

Financing Gender-Responsive Food Security

Closing the chronic financing gap in gender and food security programming by mobilising governments, multilaterals, and the private sector.

About MAHA

Born from the Conviction That Africa's Mothers Must Lead the Fight Against Hunger

Across Africa, women constitute the backbone of smallholder agriculture — producing the majority of food consumed at household level — yet they remain locked out of the land, resources, financing, and governance structures that shape the continent's food systems.

MAHA was founded to change that. We are a non-partisan, continental platform that bridges grassroots women farmers, senior policymakers, development finance institutions, and global hunger advocates — building the case, the coalitions, and the commitments that will make gender-responsive food security a reality across all 54 African Union member states.

International Women's Day · March 2026

MAHA's Inaugural Meeting — A Historic Milestone for Women and Hunger in Africa

In March 2026, MAHA convened its Inaugural Meeting in commemoration of International Women's Day — bringing together founding members, policymakers, nutritionists, food systems experts, and grassroots women leaders from across the continent. The meeting resulted in the adoption of MAHA's founding documents, the MAHA Inaugural Communiqué, and the formal constitution of the Continental Steering Committee.
